Cresset Newsletter for April 28 2008

Picture 3

Spring is here, with a few snowflakes in between. We have nine newborn calves enjoying themselves running in circles, jumping in the air. And sucking and resting is important too.

We are putting up a fence around the farmyard to keep the chickens out of plants some flowers and herbs.

The nursery is set up again and we are mixing soil and planting the first seeds for the vegetable garden. Leeks, Onions, Tomatoes, Peppers and Basil plants are already growing in our friend John's greenhouse.

Do you still want to sign up for summer shares? Do it right away, we are almost sold out.

Barter Share: We are still accepting applications for barter share members for the 2008 Summer share. Let us know soon that you are interested, call 970 278 0499 or email cresset@frii.com for an application.

Thanks to our members for responding to our questionnaires. I will start to address a few remarks and requests:

Potatoes
For several years, we have not grown potatoes here on the farms because it is challenging to grow them in our soil. We do trade with Monroe Organic Farms, They are growing potatoes for us and we grow Napa Cabbage for their CSA. Up to now, we could only get potatoes late in the fall and we cannot offer them as early as we would like. These potatoes must be stored, therefore some may be small or soft.

Peas and Carrots
Many of you have asked for peas and early carrots. We have not grown peas for many years now and carrots only for the fall harvest because of the conflict with the water availability, (The water is also the reason that we start our CSA fairly late in the season.) We usually do not get the water to irrigate until May, sometimes later and peas grow best early in the season and early carrots are planted in March When in the coming years, we are able to store water in a pond, we will be more flexible.
